Ngai’s work is brimming with nostalgia yet she does not shy away from telling the quiet truth of her subjects. Her work possesses a familiar melancholy I find as comforting as hot tea on a cold grey day. I can only guess that Ngai’s richly detailed “propagandist” drawing and color style is a nod to her Hong Kong upbringing. (Read her bio on her website for the whole story.)
