Craww’s work cleverly swirls with contradictions as he blends masculine femininity with optimistic despondency then coats it with an oily glow. His delicate figures often show heart-tugging pain on their faces, but their oversized brawny hands make them seem far from vulnerable. Looking at his paintings I imagine his characters are on the knife’s edge of enlightenment and butchery.

Latest News: Craww is part of a group show called “Crooked Comfort” at C.A.V.E Gallery in Venice, CA.

Craww Notes:

What artists or creative person has influenced you?
Well there’s a whole bunch, but somewhere towards the top of the list would have to be James Jean. I just love every thing he does – every stroke, every line, just nails it. I really like the work Herakut are doing at the moment too, i’m loving the way their 2 different styles complement each other.

Not including other artists or art, what inspires you?
Anything that gets me into a groove. Sticking some tunes on, (usually Deftones), riding my mountain bike, hanging out, daydreaming. That’s the healthy stuff, then there’s a not-so-healthy dose of fear and paranoia. Those moments when I think I’m never going to be as good as I want to be are pretty good for lighting a fire under my ass.

What is the part of your process you enjoy the most? … the least?
I find each piece goes through a similar workflow. I like starting a painting, sketching and doodling with half an idea, then they take on a life of there own.

I usually find that half way through a piece I have a crisis, it all looks wrong, it’s going nowhere. That’s the part I dont like, but I’m trying to discipline myself to stick with it, because usually i’ll reach a point where it all comes together.

And then I really enjoy the final stretch, working on the detail, knowing i’m pretty happy with it and it’s just a matter of making the good things better!

If you were NOT an artist, what would you be doing?
I’ve got no idea! I can’t imagine not being an “artist.” It’s only recently I’ve started to be able to make a living from my art, but ever since I was a kid I’ve always drawn/doodled/scribbled. So i dunno, it’s kinda like asking someone who they would be if they weren’t themselves!

Thank you so much for your time, Craww!
